Books That Changed My Life
I was a member of an incredibly stimulating book club run by a holistic health clinic. Unfortunately, due to time constraints I had to give it up, but not before reading a selection of books that, literally, changed my life. Some of these books include the following.
Eating AnimalsAlthough I had been leaning towards vegetarianism for some time, it took the enlightened work of Jonathan Safran Foer to convince me to give up meat, poultry and fish. His premise that all animals are created equally is argued with such clear and accessible logic and with such power that just part way through the book, I found it impossible to continue eating animals.
This book can be a challenging read and some sections had me weeping. But Foer asks some big questions and offers some hard-to-swallow answers. If you care about this planet and its creatures, this is a must-read. |
Having FaithNot having had children, I likely would never have selected this book to read on my own. But thanks to my book club, the wonders of motherhood were revealed to me, as well as the immediate ecological threats that are endangering the health of this and future generations of unborn children.
Sandra Steingraber skilfully uses the most beautiful prose to describe some incredibly complex scientific information in a remarkably accessible manner. It surprised me more than anyone that this book was a page-turner, keeping me up late at nights as I marveled at how new life develops. So how did this book change my life? I finally truly grasped what a miracle life is and, at the same time, the book alerted me, in a visceral way, how much we humans are at risk. Mothers with daughters especially, please read this book - and act! |
